Meeting Duration: 40 minutes
Next meeting: TBD
Mason Paquette created the meeting minutes at 10:01 PM on February 8, 2025.
- CSA Room Schedule
- Everyone needs to add their availability to the google doc
- Focus on only opening and closing the room
- Aiming for 3 days a week (at least 2 days)
- CSA Merch
- Need to allow members to vote on desired merch types (t-shirt, long sleeve, hoodie, etc.)
- Suggested hosting a design competition, where students can submit their own designs. (We could provide a few CSA leaf images for reference?)
- Use stages of voting (Qualifying, qualifying, semi-finals, finals?)
- The student design that wins gets one free merch item.
- Design contest to be held before the reading break in February
- Cost of merchandise needs to be confirmed
- Future events
- Global game jam (Not hosted by us, but we can provide a room, snacks, etc)
- We could also host our own on a smaller scale.
- Russell can help us organize this event
- It may be possible to use the computing facility for funding
- Chilliwack tech hackathon
- Not much involvement will be required on our part other than promotion.
- Coding competition
- Russell can help run this event
- A lot of promotion needs to be done (Posting around campus, asking instructors of your classes to re-post, etc.)
- Provide some good prizes
- Look into gaining some funding from computing faculty
- Two divisions (div 1 and 2)
- Division 2 has easier questions than division 1
- Planning for 2-3 hours
- Get a room booked (expected max of 25 students in attendance)
- Tech panel 2025
- Computing faculty will most likely ask for a speaker from our side.
- Faisal Neem has more information about the tech panel
- Social event at Redeye Lounge
- The last event was very successful
- Interested in hosting one later in the semester (March-April)
- We will try to get the lounge for 5-6 hours this time
- Better prizes
- Global game jam (Not hosted by us, but we can provide a room, snacks, etc)
- Collaboration and Student involvement
- Suggested collaborating with the computing department to develop more effective computing class tutors
- Assisting the faculty to make lab monitors more effective.
- Usefulness of lab monitors is class and instructor dependent
- It is common for lab monitors to simply go to class and go home without being able to assist students very much.
- We want to provide more avenues for lab monitors to engage students
- Office hours
- Anonymous forum posting
- Allegedly possible with the new Brightspace system
- Unsure of who to speak to in the computing faculty about this.
- Usefulness of lab monitors is class and instructor dependent
- Hosting small talks or workshops
- We could invite guests, such as instructors or students, and allow them present something
- Examples of some recent events last semester
- Zia Hossain hosted a networking research presentation over zoom in November
- Ishwak Sharda (a computing student) hosted a blockchain workshop at Abbotsford
- Some instructors like Russell can replace a course assignment with the student completing something at a workshop.
- People to speak to
- Research coordination chair
- Club-wide open-source project
- Something that the club could spend the next year working on
- Ask the club what they want to work on (or provide a list of choices) and have them vote.
- Project involvement would be semi-organized
- Members can work on their own time
- We also set up weekly or bi-weekly project meetings to discuss progress, ideas, etc. (Could be on campus or online.)
Action items
- Mason will discuss tutors with Frank (will see if theres any relevant contacts as well)
- Sabreen will meet with Russell about the programming competition/game jam
- Merch voting and starting the design contest needs to be done very soon.
- Finalize CSA room schedule
- Determine the open-source project to propose to the csa members.
Let students present their applications over a short presentation
